When it comes to designing and constructing the perfect en suite bathroom, there are certain qualities that each bathroom must have to make it functional, comfortable and luxurious. It all starts with having the right amount of space and adding natural light to enhance all the details of the bathroom.
Space and Light
While en suite bathrooms can be nearly any size, they should all contain enough space to move around comfortably and include lots of natural light. When space planning, it is important to keep in mind some standard fixture sizes. Standard bathtubs are 60” by 21” by 36”. Luxury bathtubs and jetted bathtubs can be much larger. A standard walk-in shower is 36” by 36”, but large, luxury showers can be as big as 60” by 60” and contain benches and other features for holding soaps razors and lotions. Double-sinks also take up more room than single sinks. A full-size en suite bathroom should be at least 7′ by 5′ but if separate baths and showers are desired, the space should be larger.
Lighting fixtures are essential for illuminating the bathroom, but natural light adds ambiance and can improve your mood and energy levels. A couple options for adding natural light to your en suite bathroom include skylights and frosted glass windows. Consider adding a small window near the ceiling in your shower or a frosted glass window along the exterior wall.
When viewing an upscale spa or hotel bathroom, you’ve probably noticed lots of neutral colors and natural materials, including stone, tile and granite. Using natural materials in your bathroom will give it a luxurious look and create ambiance, and the materials will never go out of style. If you want to get creative, you can also have your shower floor constructed out of stone, tile or teak wood for a completely custom look.
En suite bathrooms with wow factors have luxurious and unique fixtures. Consider adding a whirlpool or jetted bathtub. The warm water combined with the jets can help sooth sore muscle and relieve stress after a long day at work. If you prefer to take showers, consider a larger shower with multiple shower heads or a steam shower with a built-in bench. If you and your partner both get up near the same time during the week, consider dual master bath sinks to speed up your morning routines.
When planning your bathroom, don’t forget the amenities. Heated floors can make walking into your bathroom in the morning and getting out of the shower a pleasure instead of an exercise in how to not freeze while getting ready in the morning. For extra warmth, consider adding a towel warming drawer or heated towel rods. You can also add recessed heat lights.
Fireplaces can also add luxury, ambiance and warmth. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider adding a dual-sided fireplace that warms both your en suite bathroom and your mater bedroom.
Another popular option is an aromatherapy system. These systems are designed to emit soothing scents to reduce stress and enhance feelings of well-being.
If you really want to turn your en suite bathroom into a luxurious haven, consider a bidet. Bidets are cleaning devices that use water instead of toilet paper for a more thorough cleaning and fresher feel than using lots of toilet paper. They can also be used for impromptu feet cleaning. Though, they should not be used as foot soakers.
Lastly, don’t forget the details. Adding plush rugs, artwork and candles can really finish off the look of your master bathroom. If you have enough room, you may even consider a small table with extra towels, wash clothes and soaps.
