Do I Need an Architect?

Different townships have different rules. That's why we always recommend that you check with your local authorities prior to starting any home improvement project. However, not every project requires an architect.


The following types of projects wILL typically require an architect's certification in order to receive approval from your local building and construction authorities:


  • Changes to the shape, area, or size of an existing space
  • Removal of walls between two or more spaces
  • Installation of any window(s) or door(s) that did not previously exist
  • Adding or relocating any plumbing fixtures
  • Work on a house that requires excavation and/or new foundation work
  • Additions or expansions of an existing home
  • New home builds


The following types of projects TYPICALLY DO NOT REQUIRE an architect's certification:


  • Replacing existing elements like siding, roofing, windows and doors
  • Upgrading your home's insulation
  • Repairing or painting wall boards, or refinishing floors
  • Installing or replacing existing mechanical elements like your HVAC system, water heater, sump pump, etc.
  • Upgrading your existing electrical or plumbing
  • Basement waterproofing, sump pits, and French drains
  • Landscaping, site work, anything apart from the house and/or detached garage.
